Positive Reviews
positive:
Excellent location in the village
While the heritage portion of New Lanark is small, guests describe the hostel's location within it as superb. They could very easily walk to the visitors centre and the other points of historic interest. It is also close to the River Clyde, and guests mention that the sound of the water rushing by is especially calming.
positive:
Great budget option
It appears there really aren't any other budget options right in New Lanark, so guests felt privileged to be able to stay in the historic centre, in a lovely restored building, at budget hostel rates.
positive:
Very well-equipped communal kitchen
It seems the guests really did make good use of the communal kitchen at hostel. It was universally described as exceptionally well-equipped, and guests felt they had all they needed to make any meal they wished, even Haggis.
Negative Reviews
negative:
Some problems with the showers
A surprising number of guests seemed to have problems with the showers. Some said that the water didn't drain properly, or that there was simply no hot water, not a great state of affairs in the cold Scottish winter.
negative:
A bit too basic for some
While most realised that it was a hostel, and that these can sometimes be very bare bones, a few guests really would have liked to see a little more care going in to the room décor, with perhaps some flashes of colour to break the monotony.
negative:
Some rooms with odd windows
The hostel is in a converted heritage building, and is unlikely to be allowed to make any external alterations. Guests mentioned that, as a result, some of the rooms had bizarre windows that were not only tiny, bit also very close to the floor. Those rooms were said to be a bit gloomy as a result.
