Situated in the lovely country village of Dowlish Wake, New Inn provides fully refurbished rooms, with charming country pub right on-site. All the rooms are well furnished with antique pieces and have a lovely understated décor. Each features en-suite bathroom with toiletries, TV and tea/coffee station. The New Inn is a pub with a few lovingly refurbished rooms, and doesn’t have, or really need, many public facilities. There is off-street parking right across the road, and of course the hosts will be happy to offer any assistance needed. Breakfast is a substantial affair, consisting of a varied continental-style buffet followed by a full cooked English breakfast prepared to order. The on-site pub offers up hearty British favourites for the other meals, and has lovely garden seating for when the weather is fine. Ilminster is only 2.3 miles drive away, and is the ideal location if you want to try out a few different pubs or restaurants.
New Inn is perhaps first and foremost a local pub, which has some wonderfully refurbished rooms to offer weary travellers. It was pretty much impossible to find a bad word written about the food served there. It was described as hearty and traditional, certainly not tiny portions of unpronounceable food that one sees at places trying too hard to be trendy.
While the parking isn't technically on-site, it is in a private lot right across the road, so was described as pretty much the same thing. In any event, motorists were glad to have the spot there so they didn't need to struggle to find nearby on-street parking.
While guests loved the charming historical stone building housing the pub, saying it simply oozed character, most were actually happy that the rooms where in a separate newly constructed building. It gave them the best of both worlds, since they enjoyed the historical atmosphere in the pub, but could then retreat to thoroughly modern rooms with all the modern conveniences.
A couple of guests mentioned that the Wi-Fi signal only works in the bar, not in the area were the rooms are located. Guests had to venture forth to be able to communicate with the broader world.
New Inn is undoubtedly first and foremost a pub. Guests who didn't really care to spend their time either out and about or in the pub really found nowhere else to go, other than their room of course.
Although not often mentioned, a few guests did report that their room was a bit grubby when they checked in.
